About The Placencia Humane Society
The Placencia Humane Society (PHS) is an all-volunteer, community-driven nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of animals across the Placencia Peninsula and surrounding areas. Through compassionate care, education, and access to essential veterinary services, PHS is creating a healthier future for both pets and the families who love them.
At the heart of their mission is a simple but powerful goal: reduce animal suffering and promote responsible pet ownership. By increasing access to spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and basic veterinary care, PHS helps prevent unwanted litters, reduce stray populations, and improve overall animal health across the region.
What They Do
PHS delivers a range of critical programs that directly impact the community:
- Spay & Neuter Clinics – Monthly 2-day clinics provide affordable and often fully subsidized services, averaging 50 animals treated per clinic
- Vaccinations & Preventative Care – Protecting pets from disease while promoting long-term health
- Animal Rescue, Foster & Adoption – Giving abandoned, abused, or surrendered animals a second chance
- Feral Cat TNR Program – Humane trap, neuter/spay, vaccinate, and release efforts to control feral populations
- Emergency Care & Transport – Coordinating urgent care, including transport to Belize City when needed
- Community Outreach & Education – Empowering pet owners with knowledge and resources
In 2023 alone, PHS:
- Treated 815 animals
- Performed 294 spay/neuter procedures
- Administered 842 vaccinations
Why It Matters
Access to veterinary care remains limited for many families in southern Belize. PHS fills this critical gap - often covering or subsidizing care for those who otherwise could not afford it. Their work not only improves animal welfare, but also strengthens the health and well-being of the broader community.
From organizing transport for animals whose owners lack access, to coordinating emergency trips over 100 miles to Belize City, PHS operates with unwavering dedication and compassion.
Looking Ahead
With the support of donors and partners, PHS continues to expand its impact. Recent progress includes securing land and relocating their clinic - but important needs remain.
Current priorities include:
- Stainless steel recovery cages
- Portable ultrasound equipment
- Portable X-ray machine
- Long-term goal: A mobile veterinary clinic to serve remote communities
