Founded in November 2017, the Corozal Animal Program in Belize is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help cats and dogs belonging to Belizeans through spaying and neutering.
Since the wages are low here, most people can't afford to fix their pet. If CAP didn't fix them, probably 70% of animals belonging to Belizeans would not get fixed.
50% of puppies are not wanted but are born because the mother wasn't fixed.
1) Annual Spay and Neuter Clinic
We host an annual spay and neuter clinic with vets and vet techs from Foundation for Veterinary Aid, (FAVI) in Montreal in a local village where there is no vet.
2) Subsidizing spays and neuters
Throughout the year CAP subsidizes spaying and neutering for dogs and cats belonging to Belizeans using three local vets. A Belizean pays USD $10 plus vaccinations and we pay the balance.
How we work
We get messages through Facebook requesting a spay or neuter
We ask the name of the person, animal and vet
We email the vet authorizing the surgery
The vet emails CAP their monthly bill
The treasurer pays the vet
Due to an increase in stray cats, we started a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program in 2023.
Cat: Male $50, Female $95
Dog: Male $100, Female $120
Clinic Update
Through January 2024 we held five clinics hosting vets and techs from Fondation Aide Vetinaire Organization https://fondationaideveterinaire.org in Montreal who pay for their own flights to Belize and their dinners, and local volunteers provide the labor too.
CAP pays for the following expenses:
Vets and vet techs: Accommodations, breakfast, lunch, permits, transportation.
Animals: Each animal receives a 5 in 1 vaccination to prevent disease and a new collar and leash.
Miscellaneous: Table and chair rental, trash bags, rubber gloves, sanitizers, hand washing soap, bleach, rubbing alcohol, gauze, hydrogen peroxide, paper towels, toilet paper, guard for community house.
